Description
Summary:Language inhibits Orang Asli pupils’ true mathematical ability. This study adopts a novel approach driven by testing and examines the validity of using trilingual test as a test accommodation for OA pupils. Two tests (BM-only and trilingual test) that had 30 computation and 20 word problem Year 5 items were translated to the English language and audio recorded in the OA native language. They were spirally administered among 207 pupils from nine schools in Perak and Kelantan. The trilingual test has comparable equivalence to BM-only test, easier and higher discriminating power. Their mathematics achievement for both computation and word problem items was higher in the trilingual test than BM-only test and in both tests, they performed better in the computation items. No pupils referred to the items written in English
