The development of oral diseases is associated with inflammation such as periodontitis, oral candidiasis, gingivitis and dental caries, contributed by chronic alcoholism, microbial infections, smoking, and poor oral hygiene. In addition to inflammatory diseases, dysbiosis was shown to influence the...

In addition to inflammatory diseases, dysbiosis was shown to influence the development of oral diseases. This presentation will converse on the role of probiotics, prebiotics, synbiotics and postbiotics in preventing oral diseases, including oral cancer and their potential as an adjunctive treatment by maintaining the balance of the oral microbiome. Probiotics produce biofilm and possess antibacterial activity against oral pathogens, while prebiotics support the growth of oral beneficial oral bacteria and suppress the oral pathogens. Furthermore, synbiotics allows a better approach in preventing dysbiosis than prebiotics or probiotics alone as it allows long-term survival of the probiotics in the oral cavity. Postbiotics also was shown to possess antibacterial, anti-cariogenic, and anticancer properties that can aid in oral cancer prevention and treatment. The use of pre-, pro-, syn- and post-biotics to prevent oral diseases is still limited despite their vast potential; ergo, discovering their prospects could herald a new approach in disease treatment while participating in combating antimicrobial resistance. 2022-03-20 Proceeding Paper NonPeerReviewed application/pdf en http://irep.iium.edu.my/108246/7/108246_Probiotics_prebiotics_postbiotics%20and%20phytotherapeutics%20dental%20application%20an%20experience%20from.pdf Arzmi, Mohd Hafiz and Mohd Fuad, Aalina Sakiinah (2022) Probiotics, prebiotics, postbiotics and phytotherapeutics dental application: an experience from Malaysia and Indonesia.
