Description
Summary:This research aims to study the effectiveness of the Bar Model’ method in assisting students to improve their problem solving skills on mathematical word problems. The study involved thirty year 4 students of a selected National Type (Chinese) Primary School in Johor Bahru district. It adopted an experimental design approach involving an experimental group and a control group of students. The experimental group underwent a learning session on problem solving of mathematical word problems using Bar Model’s method whilst the control group was taught the similar problem solving using traditional approach. The students’ problem solving skill on mathematical word problems before and after the use of each approach of problem solving were measured by specially designed pre-test and posttest respectively. Each test comprised of four Polya’s steps of problem solving namely understanding problem, planning problem solving strategies, execution of strategies and checking the solutions. The test scores on each step were generated using standardized rubrics. For each group of students, the data were analyzed using simple statically approach involving comparison of scores, the changes of scores and graphical plots of scores before and after the used of each problem solving approach. The study has found for each of the Polya’s step of problem solving, the Bar Model’s method approach appeared to be much more effective in assisting students to improve their problem solving skills on mathematical word problems.
