Summary: | Nowadays, halal concept is beginning to be more appreciated throughout the world. The
acceptance of the halal concept is due to hygiene, sanitation and safety aspects that are
much emphasized while fulfilling the shariah requirement at the same time. In this study,
we have developed a halal process for Newcastle disease vaccine production using cell
culture in bioreactor. The process developed can serve as platform for production of other
halal vaccines because it is not just safe and hygiene but also non-halal sources free.
Firstly, selected strain of Newcastle disease virus is adapted to several cell lines.
Secondly, medium for cell and virus culture is optimized to generate high virus titer. Later,
the process is scaled up from T-flask to spinner vessel and stirred tank bioreactor culture
and optimized for mass production of the virus. Throughout the whole process, porcine
derived trypsin is replaced with accutase enzyme which is derived from invertebrate
sources. In addition, Cytodex 1 microcarriers that is used in bioreactor culture is porcine
free and attracts the cells by having positive charge. As a conclusion. the process
developed for the vaccine production is halal as it is porcine free and very efficient, safer,
and more hygiene compared to the traditional method which uses embryonated chicken
