The relationship between accounting students emotional intelligence and test anxiety on their academic achievements

Emotional intelligence and test anxiety are both crucial in determining academic achievement. This study provides an insight into the relationship between emotional intelligence (EQ), test anxiety (TA) and academic achievements among first-year full-time enrolled Accounting students at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) in Kota Samarahan, Sarawak. Quantitative approach was used to measure the variables in the study. Survey data on the respondents ( N = 66) was analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical analysis in SPSS. Pearson correlation and independent sample T-test was utilized to determine the existence and strength of relationships between variables. Results showed that there is no significance relationship found between EQ and TA, a negative relationship found between EQ and academic achievements, and a negative relationship between TA and academic achievements. Analysis from finding indicate a necessity to create an awareness among the lecturers to pay adequate attention to the importance of EQ and TA in the delivery of courses , to enhance the academic performance of students.
