Description
Summary:The project was undertaken to determine the total polyphenol content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC), antioxidative property, and the functional groups that present in the extracts of dichloromethane and methanol of seeds of Moringa oleifera. The percentage yield obtained for both dicholoromethane and methanol after the extraction are 33.62% and 29.75% respectively. After the observation was done through Folin-Ciocalteu method, the TPC obtained for dichloromethane and methanol are 151.0160 ± 0.0011 mg GAE/g and 114.0214 ± 0.0008 mg GAE/g respectively. In the determination of TFC of these extracts through the aluminium chloride (AlCI₃) calometric method, it was discovered that the extracts of dichloromethane and methanol bring the value of 159.3215 ± 0.0009 mg QE/g and 137.0982 ± 0.0007 mg QE/g respectively. The oxidative property of M. oleifera were studied by using the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay, and the IC50 values obtained for dichloromethane and methanol extracts are 0.0157 mg/mL and 0.0078 mg/mL respectively. In this project, the determination of antioxidant properties of both extracts was found to have almost the same properties and the same antioxidative strength as the butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) with IC50 of 0.0045. The IC50 value of the dichloromethane is the highest followed by the IC50 of methanol extract and BHT with the lowest value. The determination of the presence of functional groups through FTIR spectrophotometer indicates IR peaks that show a very strong existence of the O-H group in the methanol extract. There are also weak peaks present with different frequencies of different functional groups in both extracts. M. oleifera has its own benefits as a good antioxidant, defensive ability in the plant and also proves its quality as medicinal plant property.
