Antibacterial profile of methanolic extracts from ten local ornamental plants against pathogenic bacteria isolated from aquaculture sites

The study was conducted to investigate the antibacterial profile of ten local ornamental plants against pathogenic bacteria isolated from aquaculture sites. The ten methanolic extracts including Snake Plant, Sansevieria trifasciata Prain, Rosy Periwinkle, Catharanthus roseus (L.) Don, Aloe Vera, Alo...

The ten methanolic extracts including Snake Plant, Sansevieria trifasciata Prain, Rosy Periwinkle, Catharanthus roseus (L.) Don, Aloe Vera, Aloe barbadensis Mill., Bougainvillea, Bougainvillea glabra Choisy, Zebra Aloe, Aloe maculata, Jungle Geranium, lxora coccinea Linn., Cardwell Lily, Proiphys amboinensis (L.) Herbert, Hibiscus, Hibiscus rosa-sinensis L., "Sambung Nyawa", Gynura procumbens (Lour.) Merr and Cape Jasmine, Gardenia jasminoides Ellis. They were screened against five bacterial isolates namely Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas sp., Aeromonas hydrophila, Salmonella sp. and Vibrio spp. by using agar well diffusion assay. There was five plants extracts showed antibacterial properties against Pseudomonas sp. with diameter inhibition zone ranged from 9 to 15 mm after 24 h (s) incubation. The five potential plants extracts were proceed tested with Minimum Inhibitory Concentration Assay to reveal the minimum concentration required to achieve the same antibacterial effect on bacterial isolate. The value of WC obtained were as low as 0.36 to 1.50 mg/mL. From present findings, the results indicated methanolic extracts from local ornamental plants especially Sansevieria trifasciata Prain, Aloe maculata, Proiphys amboinensis (L.) Herbert, Gynura procumbens (Lour.) Merr and Gardenia jasminoides Ellis possess therapeutic potency to be the natural based sources of antibacterial agent on treating diseases caused by pathogenic bacteria mainly in aquaculture industry. However, the active compounds that play the antibacterial roles are yet to be investigated further as well as in vivo assessment should be conducted in order to justify the viability of natural based antibiotic in aquaculture use. 2015 Undergraduate Final Project Report NonPeerReviewed Ho, Kit Yeng (2015) Antibacterial profile of methanolic extracts from ten local ornamental plants against pathogenic bacteria isolated from aquaculture sites.
