Description
Summary:The aim of this report is to collect data on the reading activities of form four pupils in two areas in the state of Kedah, that is, Alor Setar and Kubang Pasu. the study was conducted to investigate pupils reading from two schools located in the urban area, that is, Kolej Sultan Abdul Hamid and Sekolah Menengah Sultanah Asma as well as two schools in the rural area, Sekolah Menengah Changlun and Sekolah Menengah Pulau Nyior. Specifically the objective of this survey is to ascertain the reading activities of school pupils and consequently to determine the reading activities of school pupils and consequently to determine the reading activities and the nature of the problems presently faced but students is reading at this moment. this survey was greatly influenced by the previous study by Atan long et al. entitled "A Survey on the Reading Habits and Interests of Malaysian People" (1984) The present study focuses on school pupils as its subjects. In addition it also looks into pupils reading interests and attitudes towards reading and specific problems faced by pupils when they read. It is considered essential that not only teachers, text-book writers and curriculum planners, material designers but also the teacher himself be enlightened on such problems which students might come across when reading. teachers in particular would consider this report to be beneficial with the view in providing data or ways of overcoming such problems. Previous studies on reading have dealt with various aspects of reading. In the survey mentioned above, it was found that among the main types of reading materials, the newspaper is read by the greatest percentage of subjects (97%). This is followed by the reading of magazines (67%) and books (42%).
