Description
Summary:This paper serves to show the correlation between the habit of sniffing gum and the influences of the surrounding factors. The surrounding factors can be divided into two; parental influence and pressure as well as peer pressure. In order to attain the objective of this research, a cross-sectional survey was conducted on 30 male hostel occupants from Pokok Sena, Gajah Mati, Kedah. The respondents were between the ages of 10 to 18 year olds.Questionnaires were used to derive valuable information pertaining to the respondents’ demographic details as well as their relationships with their family and friends.A pre-test was held to evaluate the trustworthiness of the questionnaires. The analysis indicated that 70% of the respondents lived with their parents, 16.7% lived with their mothers whereas 13.3% lived with their guardians. The analysis also revealed that 56.7% of its respondents were urban dwellers and were currently in primary schools. It also indicated that the respondents were given ample freedom by the parents and this indirectly has become a contributing factor towards the gum sniffing habit among youngsters. As far as peers were concerned, this study found that many of the respondents were interested in sniffing gum if their friends introduced it to them.Besides that, many felt that there was no harm in trying out this habit. This study found that youngsters, who felt the pressure of staying at home, were more prone to loneliness and hence, found comfort in being with their friends and engaging themselves in anti-social activities. This study also revealed that adequate information and explanation has to be given to the youngsters and their families regarding the gum sniffing habit so that this problem can be handled and subsequently be reduced.
