Description
Summary:Documenting the lives of public figures is not commonly practiced in Malaysia simply because it is culturally deemed improper to intrude into people’s lives.Unlike in the West, readers are invited into the lives of public figures every now and then as countless auto biographies, memoirs or even chronicles are published all year round. Therefore, realizing the need for documenting success stories closer to home, this study hopes to offer readers the insights to the lives of reputable and successful figure who are successful in their own rights in Malaysia. These public figures were selected based on four criteria namely wealth, power or political power, personality and their expertise which have helped them gain success, authority and respect in their respective fields. Based on Krumboltz’s Social Learning Theory (1996), this study used both qualitative and quantitative analysis of research data method. In order to obtain data, researchers relied on oral history method whereby respondents were subjected to semi-structured interview sessions. The study focused on seven public figures who are acknowledged for their abilities and successes in their respective fields determined by the researchers. Meanwhile, oral history involving the use of structured interview questions to obtain information was utilized. Results showed that there are several significant similarities in the research domains such as their background, talent and aptitude and ability (mental and physical), ability to seize the right opportunity and luck. The study also revealed that at 55.03 percent, the ability to seize the right opportunities, is the highest contributing factor to the success of these subjects.Meanwhile, the luck factor contributes only 1.54 percent. Other factors namely talent and self ability contribute 37.63 percent and respectively, followed by their family background at 2.54 percent. While self-conflict factor, a newly discovered factor in the study contributes rather significantly at 3.26 percent. All of the respondents agree that factors namely their descent, environment, education and skills have helped them to achieve their successes. On the other hand, the element of luck is somewhat difficult to be considered as the key to their successes. The study managed to fulfill the objectives of the research as all of the respondents share similar attributes as shown in the data analysis. However, due to the enormity of the scope, this research needs to be conducted more extensively in order to produce a more detailed documentation of additional attributes.
