Computer science Sustainable development of health information system (HIS) in developing countries is difficult to achieve since it is always constrained by expensive resources and depends heavily on human skills and supplies which tend to be limited in the developing countries. Therefore, it is very important to search for an effective approach to improve the development strategies of HIS, so the HIS can be sustained within the limited resources available in the developing countries. This paper presents a notion that an affordable and high quality HIS can be developed and sustained through open source software (OSS) and free open health software solutions with the right development approach. This paper first looks at the issues of sustainable HIS development in the developing countries and discusses on OSS development and free open health software to support sustainability development of HIS within the limited resource settings.Last but not least, this paper proposes that a suitable open onion can improve the approach for sustainable development of HIS in the developing countries. 2016-04-05 Conference or Workshop Item NonPeerReviewed application/pdf en http://repo.uum.edu.my/23566/1/ICT4T2016%20327%20332.pdf Mahmod, Noor Mazlina and Mohd Zin, Abdullah Asuhaimi and Mohd Satar, Nurhizam Safie (2016) Open source solutions and open onion for sustainable development of health information system in developing countries.
