Intellectual property has become a significant factor for one to be seen as successful in a very competitive market. It is also a new source of wealth in stimulating a country’s economy. However, the awareness of the intellectual property right in Malaysia is still low, as compared to that in other countries.The purpose of this study is to discuss the importance and challenges of intellectual property right and copyrighting.It will also show the process and procedure of getting the intellectual property protection for copyright in Malaysia and also in Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM). In this study, the number of inventions that has registered for copyright among the UUM academic staff will also be collected, in order for us to investigate their awareness level towards intellectual property rights.
