Summary:This study focuses on the expansion of British influence in Kedah after the Siamese government unwind positions on Kedah following the Bangkok Agreement in 1909.During the expansion of British influence in Kedah, the role and influence of the British High Commissioner become an important element compared to the role of the British Adviser of Kedah.The British High Commissioner has taken an active part in ensuring that British influence can be strengthened in the administration of Kedah.The British High Commission has put their influence through close ties with the sultanate and local Malay chiefs. Through that relationship, the British High Commissioner has played a major role in ensuring the British position in Kedah recognized by the sultanate and the local Malay chiefs. British High Commissioner who understood the local political culture has ensured the sultanate and local malay chiefs depends on the influence of the British High Commissioner in the exercise of state administration. Despite the role British Adviser of Kedah to advise the Sultan and the local Malay chiefs, the British High Commissioner want ensure they become more dominant influence among the sultanate and the local Malay chiefs.Thus the role and influence of the British High Commissioner cause British Adviser of Kedah to discharge its duties without facing strong opposition from the sultanate and local malay chiefs. The role and influence of the British High Commissioner had caused the British position in Kedah has been strengthened in the government and administration of Kedah.
