Summary:In order to extend the product of Research & Development (R & D) to the community and the industry at national and international level, various platforms have been introduced by the Ministry of Education (MOE).One of these platforms was Persidangan dan Ekspo Ciptaan Institusi Pengajian Tinggi Antarabangsa 2011 (PECIPTA 2011).Such a platform would provide an opportunity for researchers and inventors Institutions of Higher Learning (IHL) held special exhibitions to introduce IHL research results to the industry and the public.In a series of previous PECIPTA many products on display was awarded a gold, silver and bronze, however only few of the R & D findings were found to be successfully commercialized.Therefore, this problem has prompted researchers to compare the perception of judges from the industry and from academia on the newly innovated and produced products.Feedbacks via surveys were also collected from the event’s public visitors.Questionnaires were distributed to all judges who are involved in PECIPTA'11. The same form is distributed to event’s public visitors.Four factors for the commercial prospects of product R & D IHL have identified the social contribution, product quality, product commercialization and product presentations.Mann Whitney U test showed that overall there were no significant differences between the perceptions of judges from industry and academia for all the factors.Further, the study also shows that there is a difference in perception between the event’s public visitors and judges for items new knowledge contribution, high originality and minimal R&D enhancement for the quality of the product factor.Further, there are also differences in perception between the event’s public visitors and the judges in the commercialization of products factor that is for the Commercial High Value and Fast Time to Market items.Difference of perceptions between event’s public visitors and judges are also available for the presentation products factor, in use high quality materials item.The study was able to achieve the outlined objectives and the results can be utilized to serve as a guide for PECIPTA or similar events in the future, especially in the determination of the award criteria and evaluation of the R&D products.
