Summary:This study attempted to see how student background, home environment and personality variables influenced the academic achievement of secondary school students in the District of Pendang, Kedah. 234 out of 593 form four students were chosen as sample. Stratified random sampling were used for this study. Data was collected through 67 item questionnaire constructed on a 5 Likert scale. Both descriptive and Inferential statistics were used to analyze the data. Statistical tools such as t-Test, One Way Analysis Of Variance (ANOVA) and Multiple Regression were used to test the hypothesis. The 0.05 level of significant were used in this study. The findings of this study showed that most of the students come from the lower socio-economic group. Their academic achievements are moderate. This study further found that students’ past performance, reference (books and friends), home environment in terms of physical guidance and locus of control significantly influenced the academic achievement of the students. All the variables significantly explained 69.8 percent of the variance in academic achievement. Based on this findings, several suggestion were proposed to increase the level of student commitment to school and their academic achievement.
