Summary:Institutions of higher learning facing the problem of the shortage students to enroll in science and technology programs. This is not consistent with the fast development in science and technology such as Multimedia Super Corridor, LRT and KLIA which need more expert workers in science and technology. The shortage of student in science will have a direct impact the Vision 2020, to enable Malaysian to become an industrial country by the year 2020. The problem starts at the form four level in secondary school when the students have to make decision whether enroll in science or art streams. This study will determine the factors that influence them in their decisions to choose science or art streams. The major objective of this study is to investigate the relationship between decision to enroll in science stream with demographic factors, socio-economic status of their parents, academic achievement, and environment factors such as family, friends, teachers, schools, media, career interests, and motivation. The sample of the study is 565 form four students from six government school in Kota Setar District. The instrument used in this study is set of questionnaire with 43 items. The statistical tool used in the study are qualitative statistics: Chi-Square, Pearson Correlation, and quantitative statistics: Multiple Regression Analysis (MRA). The finding of the study shows that in demographic factors, genders and race have significant influence on the decision to enroll in science stream, but the numbers of siblings, the birth order of student, the geographical background and locality of their primary schools are not significant influence on their decision. In socio-economic status of their parent, the mothers’ education and the parental income are significant, but the fathers’ education and their parental occupation are not significant. In academic achievement, Bahasa Melayu, English, Science and Mathematics are significant influences. In environment factors, friends, media, career interests and motivation are significant influences on theirs decision, but family, teachers and schools are not significant. In Multiple Regression Analysis it is shown that all variables are significantly explained the variance of decision to enroll in science stream. Hopefully the results of this study could be useful for the education’s officers and teachers in planning their programs and activities to make more students enroll in science streams.
