Description
Summary:The purpose of this study is to determine Headmaster's style of leadership, frequency level of management behavior and teachers' commitment to profession and organization. The study also aims to determine whether there is correlation between the three variables and students' academic achievement. The leadership style of every Headmasters is based on 'Leader Behavior Description Questionaire', Form XH (LBDQ XO). The level of Headmasters' behavior management is measured using Nickson's (1990) questionaire, while teachers commitment level is measured using 'Overall Commitment Scale' questionaire by Yusoff bin Haji Hanifah (1981). School academic achievement is measured in term of the results of 2001 Ujian Penilaian Sekolah Rendah. One hundred and fifty teachers teaching in Year Five and Year Six at eight national primary schools in Paya Educational Regional Perlis have been selected as respondents in the study. The collected data was analyzed using descriptive statistic. 'Pearson Product Moment' correlation was used to analyse the data. The result indicate that, all of the Headmasters practised more Autocratic style, and Democratic style compared to Laizzie-faire style. All eight Headmasters were also found to carry out managing functions of planning, supervising, leading and controlling. The results show that teacher's commitment is high. From the study 39.3 percent of the respondents indicates that they will continue their services and 23.4 percent hopes to further their studies in 10 years time. Correlation analysis shows that there is positive relation between Headmaster's leadership style, management behavior, teacher's commitment and students academic achievement. The results show that all the variables are correlated. Based on the results it is proposed that Headmasters and prospective Headmaster should be exposed the importance of selecting the right style of leadership and suitable management in their school situation.
