From early onshore drilling in Miri to deepwater spar platform in offshore Sabah shows the rapid growth of this industry. The improvement of technology and design codes also plays an influential part in expanding this industry. In Malaysia, the design codes often referred to are the API codes. This is because in the early days, the major players Royal Dutch Shell and Exxon Mobil referred to these codes for their design. After incorporation of PETRONAS, the approach was continued designing offshore platforms. Malaysia has over 200 offshore platforms, installed in 3 regions. All these platforms are unique because they were designed based on different codes and functions. This paper classifies the platforms based on their design codes in order to differentiate each design philosophy of Malaysia fixed offshore platforms.
