Summary:Most previous studies focused on the effect and influence of transformational leadership style on organizational commitment. However, it is believed that the employees’ attitude and behavior such as the perception towards work (psychological empowerment) are crucial to boosting employees’ organizational commitment. This study was carried out to analyze the mediating effect of psychological empowerment on the relationship between transformational leadership and organizational commitment in the Johore State Education Department. 90 respondents who were Education Service Officer ranked from DG41 to DG54, were involved in this study. The questionnaires consisted of Organizational Commitment Questionnaire (OCQ), Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ) and Psychological Empowerment Questionnaire (PEQ). Descriptive and inferential statistics that include simple linear and multiple linear regressions were used to analyze the data. Three statistical regression analyses based on Baron and Kenny (1986) assumptions were used for the purpose of determining the effect of psychological empowerment as mediator. The findings prove that there is a significant effect of transformational leadership style towards organizational commitment. Besides, transformational leadership also affect psychological empowerment. Psychological empowerment demonstrates a significant role as the mediator to the relationship of transformational leadership style towards organizational commitment. The most important findings of the study reveals that psychological empowerment fully mediates the relationship between transformational leadership style and organizational commitment. This study contributes to the understanding of the importance of transformational leadership style and the impact of psychological empowerment in improving organizational commitment.
