Summary: | In this chapter, the theoretical background of biomechanics in the field of dentistry especially through the application of osseointegrated dental implants is presented. This includes the description of force distribution by natural teeth and also dental prostheses for patients treated with osseointegrated implants. Reports from several past clinical-based findings on force transmission in dental implant system and also the application of finite element methods in predicting the performance of dental implant complex are also discussed. This chapter also put an emphasis on the explanation of biomechanical aspects in different implant-supported restorations (fixed implant-retained prosthesis and implant-retained overdenture) and also in the application of zygomatic implantts for the treatment of patients with severely atrophic posterior maxillae. |
