Summary:This research is about the study of the participation of local residents in tourism activity. This research was conducted at one of the local villages in Johor namely, Kampung Serkat in the province of Pontian. The main focus of this research is to study the perception of the villagers about various tourism activities that they have participated. Particularly, this research is i) to know what kind of participation that the villagers participated particularly in tourism activities, ii) to determine what are the factors that influence villagers to participate in tourism activities, iii) to examine the effects of the participation of the villagers in tourism activities and iv) to analyze what are the problems that caused by the participation of the villagers in tourism activities. This research was qualitative in nature which, in depth semi-structure interview method was applied in order to collect the needed data. After that, the data that collected from this interview is transcribed and translated. Quoting the important points from this transcribed interview and each of them will be presented and analyzed. The finding is presented in middle grounded theory so it will help us in understanding the result easily. This finding has shown that almost half of the residents of studied area participated in the tourism activities indirectly. Only few of them participated directly. However, their participation is only partially. Interest and time are the two factors that really influential in their participation in tourism activities. The effect of tourism activities in studied area can be seen from various angles, economically, socially, culturally and physically.
