Summary: | Malaysia is one of the world leaders in the production and export of crude palm oil. In Malaysia, the oil palm industry has contributed vastly towards the country’s economic well being. During the economic crisis in the late 1990s, the industry has helped to cushion the impact of the economic downturn through its export-oriented activities, which provided the much needed foreign exchange for the country. Crude palm oil (CPO) production has increased from only 1.3 million tonnes in 1975, to 4.1 million tonnes in 1985 and 7.8 million tonnes in 1995 to 17.56 million tonnes in 2009 (Malaysian Palm Oil Board-MPOB, 2010). |
