Characterization of total suspended solids, COD, and oil & grease in stormwater runoff from an industrial site

It is essential to understand the characteristics and impacts of the stormwater pollutants to the aquatic environment Therefore, this paper aimed to present the results of total suspended solids (TSS), COD and oil & grease (O & G) during three storm events sampled from industrial site in Sku...

Civil engineering (General) It is essential to understand the characteristics and impacts of the stormwater pollutants to the aquatic environment Therefore, this paper aimed to present the results of total suspended solids (TSS), COD and oil & grease (O & G) during three storm events sampled from industrial site in Skudai, Johor. The stormwater samples were collected by grab sampled and analyzed according to the Standard Methods (APHA). The results showed that the highest event mean concentration for TSS, COD and O & G is 124mg/L, 188mg/L and 4.38 mg/L respectively. From the pollutographs analysis, the peak concentration of TSS precedes the peak runoff flow rate for all three storm events. All constituents also showed the occurrence of first flush phenomenon for all three storm events, which suggest that first flush occurs strongly at the small watershed area. In addition, highest rainfall depth and intensity produces the strongest first flush effect at the industrial site. 2009 Conference or Workshop Item PeerReviewed Fai, Chow Ming and Yusop, Zulkifli (2009) Characterization of total suspended solids, COD, and oil & grease in stormwater runoff from an industrial site.
