Speed is one of the measurement that is really important in engineering and other aspects. The development of the speed measurement using encoder system is used to measure the rotation speed of a direct current (DC) motor. The DC motor can be a range of size of its shaft diameter that can be measured. This project combined 5 phases of design to build this project. The 5 phases are encoder wheel, comparator circuit, decoder circuit, PIC16F877 microcontroller circuit, and LCD display circuit. This design can measure the speed in forward and backward rotation. Its interfaces is user-friendly and it is convenient to use it in the lab or home. This design can help lecturers or students doing their practical or research. This system has worked according to its program but still it cannot get the highest accuracy in measuring the speed of DC motor.
