Description
Summary:This paper is a continuation of the paper titled the “The Systematic Zakat Management and Administration: A Framework for the State of Kano, Nigeria” presented at the Islamic Economics Systems Conference (i-econs 2013) In Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The study looks into the reported setback faced by the Zakat system that leads to its partial collapse, with special reference to Kano as the study area. The paper discusses recent renaissance in the zakat system by many Muslim states and communities that bring about positive effects to the cotemporary Muslim communities. Although, many scholars have observed some shortcomings in the present zakat administration system, this paper intends to review Zakat management with emphasis on the distribution system in an ‘Islamic’ state in Nigeria (Kano) by identifying the historical backgrounds of Zakat Management in the State and discussing the methods employed by the Zakat Bodies in distribution of Zakat funds with a view to recommend a suitable Zakat distribution methods for the State of Kano. To achieve that, the paper reviews the Zakat distribution systems of other Muslim countries and communities and finally, recommendations have been made on ways to improve the distribution system.
