Description
Summary:This research is based upon on our findings regarding the fatwa management in the Philippines. It is not strictly doctrinal but merely informative in tracing its development in a non-Islamic country, like Philippines. We traced in broad brush strokes the development of the ifta'institution from the colonial to the present; it attempts to show how such development has been applied to the different Muslim ethnical communities in the country. Being the minority population in the vast Christian majority, it is indeed a challenge for them to implement and uphold the Islamic teachings and practice, let alone its management at a national level. Nevertheless, after some effort throughout the history until today, the Filipino Muslims have achieved a good position in the country in preserving their religion as well as their religious culture and heritage. It is a major premise that this research is of global significance as it is not only intrinsically interesting in finding out the mechanisms used in managingfami but also to examine the methods used to disseminate fatwa to the Muslim society. The research lays out some selected fatwa collected during the personal interview with the former government Mufti and other relevant parties. It has been concluded that fatwa institution in the Philippines has a chequered history but with the Muslim Filipinos commitment for unity and the sincere support of the Philippines Government, fatwa management is determined to be successful in a non-Islamic state.
