Description
Summary:To set up a breeding program several basic informations such as the objective. the crop's genetics cytogenetics and reproductive system and genetics of the characters to be improved are very essential. Based on the informations available it can be deduced that pepper is tetraploid (2n= 4x) and heterozygous. the foot rot resistance is apparently controlled by a single additive gene which undergoes either chromosome or maximal equational segregations. and chromosomal changes contribute to the crop's variability. Recent studies indicated that the number of harvestable spikes per node contribute the most to pepper yield. Based on these informations three breeding approaches are suitable for pepper improvement. screening superior genotypes in the field; screening superior genotypes from segregating open pollinated or hybrid populations; and mutation breeding.
