Efficacy of silver, titanium and silica nanoparticles against grams positive and negative bacteria

The antimicrobial effects of silver (Ag) ion or salts are well known, but the effects of Ag combine with other nanoparticles on microorganisms and antimicrobial mechanism have not been revealed clearly. Stable silver, titatium and silica nanoparticles solutions were prepared as N1 (10ppm) and N2 (1...

H., Mardhiah Hayati Bejo, Mohd Hair Wahab, Mukminah Sakinah The antimicrobial effects of silver (Ag) ion or salts are well known, but the effects of Ag combine with other nanoparticles on microorganisms and antimicrobial mechanism have not been revealed clearly. Stable silver, titatium and silica nanoparticles solutions were prepared as N1 (10ppm) and N2 (100ppm). The antimicrobial activity of the nanoparticles was investigated against Gram positive (Staphylococcus aureus) and Gram negative bacteria (Salmonella enteritidis). The bacteria were exposed to the nanoparticles solutions for 10, 20, 30 and 60 minutes. The study showed that no-growth of S. enteritidis and S. aureus were recorded following N1 and N2 solutions treatment throughout the trials, except the N1 solution has no effect on the growth of S. aureus. It was concluded that the combined silver, titatium and silica nanoparticles solutions at 100ppm (N2) is effective growth inhibitor for the Gram negative (S. enteritidis) and Gram positive (S. aureus) bacteria and may be used as effective growth inhibitors in various microorganisms, making it applicable to diverse antimicrobial control systems. 2012 Conference or Workshop Item PeerReviewed application/pdf en http://psasir.upm.edu.my/id/eprint/50245/1/2-17.pdf A.
