Description
Summary:The effectiveness of bird diversity management depends on how efficient are the monitoring programs. It suggests whether the particular types of management should be continued or changed. This paper provides general guidelines for the design and implementation of successful monitoring programs in the management of bird populations. The guidelines were based on findings of previous studies on birds in tropical forest especially in Sungai Lalang Forest reserve, Selangor. To be successful, bird monitoring programs should (1) be structured by well-integrated objectives that are relevant to management goals; (2) identify a set of indicators with sampling methods that permit unbiased and statistically powerful results; (3) ensure the continuity monitoring programs even though there are changes in personnel, technology and programs objectives, and (4) ensure that all findings are distributed to a wide audience especially policy makers as soon as possible. Only through such an integrated process can the complete cycle in bird diversity management be successfully completed and thus, the management practices and policies employed become beneficial to tropical forest birds.
