Formation of sorbitol by cathodic reduction of glucose

The steady-state formation of sorbitol by cathodic reduction of glucose was studied in a parallel-plate reactor of 200 cm² electrode area. Earlier work was extended to explore the effect of flow rate; pH and current density. The effect of temperature between 20° and 47° C and the use of amalgamated...

Earlier work was extended to explore the effect of flow rate; pH and current density. The effect of temperature between 20° and 47° C and the use of amalgamated lead as compared with chemical lead and other metals is discussed. It is shown that addition of Zn²+ ions accelerates the reaction and the reasons for this are discussed. The implications for industrial application are considered.
