Summary: | Liquid biphasic system (LBS), also known as aqueous two-phase system, is an alternative separation and purification method for downstream processing of biomolecules. The advantages of this system include high biocompatibility, simple and rapid operation, high flexibility and efficiency. In recent years, several other techniques such as solvent sublation, ultrasonication, electrolysis, magnetic-assisted, and microwave-assisted extraction have been incorporated into LBS in order to achieve an even better system. This chapter will explore those advance LBS, their mechanism as well as how they have been improving the recovery and production of various biological products. 2023 Elsevier Inc.
