This research is focused more on flexibility of a rotor bearing that can influence the stability of the system. There are many types of bearing used in any application but for this research, a plain journal is used. By having this analysis, we can know whether a system is stable or not. It is noted that for any unstable operation, dangerous incident may occur or machine failure might occur. Hence this research is quite important. This research started by deriving the equations of motion starting from Newton Second Law of motion. Then, the derivation including transforming the equations into non-dimensional form, assuming the solutions and substitutes the solutions into the governing equation. The equation is then being put into matrix form in order to find its determinant. The determinant is important so that the equation can be grouped as real and imaginary part. The derivation is proceed until the formula of stability parameters are found. Finally, for a series of journal eccentricity, the stability graph can be formed. From the graph, the stable and unstable region can be determined. For different values of shaft flexibility, different region of stability is determined. From the research that has been conducted it is found that the more flexible a shaft is, the lower the stability threshold of the flexible rotor. It can be concluded that for higher flexibility of a shaft, instability might occur at lower speed of operation. Hence a prediction of a stable operating condition can be made from this research. A case study about a hydro-turbine system is also included to give better understanding on the stability analysis.
