When lightning strikes transmission tower, large currents with high frequency generated by the stroke flow in the above ground structures and grounding system, and dissipate into the soil. Since lightning is a natural phenomena and cannot be prevented, it is necessary to have a proper design of earthing in order to dissipate currents into the soil effectively. This thesis analyzes the details about high frequency transient condition due to lightning and also design the grounding grid of the transmission tower under these condition. Apart from that, the effect of soil ionization, electric field and magnetic field and also being analysed by using CDEGS software. A high resistivity layer with underlying low resistivity soil, earthing design that includes more vertical rod combined with counterpoise should be chosen. Conversely, a design using long counterpoise would be selected where the soil structure has low resistivity at the upper layer. Analysis verified that the magnitude of electric field dependent on the frequency. Results of electric field also illustrate that the electric field which initiating the ionization decreased whenever the soil resistivity decreased.
