However, these insulators are subjected to various types of degradation that can cause them to be damaged and therefore not to insulate in the long run. This thesis presents suggestion to reduce the effect of corona and flashover to the insulator by coating it with silicone. The performance of the silicone coated disc insulator compared to the normal disc insulator was evaluated and compared under dry and wet condition with salt contamination. This project was undertaken by coating one of the two samples of HV suspension insulators with silicone material. Hence, there will be two different samples which are silicone-coated and non-silicone-coated disc insulators. Then, the samples were being tested in high voltage laboratory for dry and wet flashover test. This test basically to measure the breakdown voltage and current of the insulator. During dry condition, the insulators had been ensured to be dry and clean from any contaminants. For wet condition, the insulator had been sprayed with specified level of salt concentration water. Under those conditions, the results for silicone coated insulator were being compared with the non-silicone-coated insulator. The results show that the breakdown voltages and currents for non-silicone- coated disc insulator is lower than the silicone-coated one. This means, corona and flashover occur faster when the insulator is without the silicone coating. The result also shows that the effect of salt contamination is prominent to the flashover phenomenon and more severe to the non-silicone coated insulator. Thus, it is proven that application of silicone coating improves the performance of HV suspension insulator. 2024-10-07T02:09:35Z 2024-10-07T02:09:35Z 2015 Resource Types::text::Final Year Project https://irepository.uniten.edu.my/handle/123456789/33693 en application/pdf |
