Summary: | Power losses in transmission of electricity are becoming a major concern to the power producers as it will reduce the efficiency of the operation. The energy losses are in form of heat energy inside the conductors. Application of superconductor in power transmission are being developed in order to rectify the power losses problems and improve its efficiencies. This project mainly aimed to compare the mechanical strength between TiO2 added dip-coated Bi-2212 superconducting tape and pure Bi-2212 superconducting tape. Two samples of Bi-2212 superconductor were fabricated using solid-state reaction method. Dip coated process is used to fabricate the superconducting tape where one of the samples had TiO2 added inside the slurry mixture and the other did not. The samples were subjected to three different analysis, XRD, SEM and strength test and discussions were made from the results obtained. It was found that the TiO2 added dip coated superconducting tape sample had a better promising phase formation and microstructure of Bi-2212 group. Even though the sample got disturbed its grain orientations and formations, additional of TiO2 element helped in enhancing the mechanical strength as the microstructure became more compact and compressed as compared to the pure sample. The strength test showed that the TiO2 added sample will having a better endurance since it withstands a higher tensile stress during the test. |
