Electrical insulation is the main component of power cable, is typically used to reflect the safe state of the cable. The dielectric response of the insulation system has always been an issue due to a variety of stresses, which the cable insulation has to be constantly exposed. It is notable that the electric field distribution is the main factor in initiating the process of insulation breakdown. The investigation of the electric field inside the cable enables the identification of local field enhancement, which could lead to a local breakdown of the insulation. In this work, the finite element method (FEM) is used to calculate and estimate the electric field inside both the single and three core power cables by considering the presence of an air void in the XLPE insulation. The investigation is carried out by modeling a single-core and three core 11kV XLPE insulated cables using COMSOL Multiphysics 5.3a to investigate several areas of importance that cannot be resolved using analytical techniques such as void size, position, and shape inside the insulation material. The results of this investigation showed that the electric field is influenced by the size of the void, the position of the void, and also the shape of the void. 2023-05-03T17:28:18Z 2023-05-03T17:28:18Z 2020-09 https://irepository.uniten.edu.my/handle/123456789/21626 en application/pdf
