Summary:The purpose of this project is to design a SAE Mini Baja frame chassis and suspension based on the 2018 Baja SAE rules. Analysis and simulations are applied on the construction of the frame and suspension design to fulfil the objectives of the project. Application of engineering design methods are utilised to produce the full design. Vehicle design includes structure of the frame chassis, material selection for frame chassis and suspension components, frame member size, types of control arm linkages, and other suspension components. The frame chassis and suspension are developed in 3D CAD software. Frame chassis is designed to incorporate the engine layout position and other components that make up the full vehicle. The frame chassis design of the SAE Baja is tested with several impact simulations in finite element analysis software to predict real world application for optimization of driver’s safety and durability. Suspension components are carefully designed to accommodate the frame chassis through analysis, research, calculations, and simulations. An optimized suspension design is developed by the selection of spring damper system through stiffness calculations. Suspension components are tested with simulations through FEA to investigate the deformation and maximum forces absorbed as well as overall reliability of the components. Results from simulations and analysis are reviewed and discussed.
