With the continuous development of technology and the improvement of solar energy performance, this has led to solar energy becoming one of the potential alternative energy sources in the next few years. This thesis presents a model of a hybrid power system that is used to connect different energy sources photovoltaic (PV), battery energy storage and the grid to provide power generation and to supply the electrical load. The proposed system includes a PV array for converting solar energy into electricity, a boost converter with a maximum power point tracking (MPPT) controller for extracting maximum power from the solar system and boosting the output voltage of the PV array, a battery storage, a three phase inverter for converting DC voltage from PV array and battery into AC voltage and a 400V utility grid power source. Energy management is an inevitable challenge when operating a grid connected microgrid with PV and battery energy storage system. The challenges are caused by factors such as solar irradiance, temperature, the size of solar PV panels, load requirements and limitations on battery charge and discharge rates. In this thesis, an energy management system is also proposed to ensure an efficient supply from the grid-PV-energy storage to the building by balancing the power flow between these sources. The energy management of this grid-connected system is performed through five different scenarios. The optimal selection of number of solar panels and the battery size are also proposed. The proposed model and energy management system are designed and simulated on MATLAB/Simulink R2015a.
