From the implementation of hardware or software for GPS positioning measurement can help in eliminating or reducing certain errors. Inexpensive or commercial GPS receivers have typical accuracy of ±10 meters. For expensive GPS receivers can provides accuracy up to ±2 meters or in centimeters. There exist applications that requires position measurements between two static targets. For example, calculating a distance between these two targets for inspection, installation, laying out a new route or replacement of old routes for underground cabling, wiring or TNB land reserve mapping. The focus of this paper, is to explore the practicable of using smartphone GPS receiver and an inexpensive GPS receiver to improve the accuracy of GPS-based distance meter. Acquiring location data simultaneously and separately at two endpoints of a distance is a method to reduce location error of GPS single point measurement and improve straight line distance measurement between two points. Data from individual receivers will be merged and recorded while doing distance measuring over a circular track with a radius of 10 meters, 20 meters and 30 meters from the reference point. The data was post processed and average distance error and percentage error for the distance accuracy is determined by using arithmetic mean and percentage error method. This paper provided better distance accuracy with an average of ±3 meters accuracy for the relative position vector between the two GPS receivers (dual-band A-GPS smartphones and Arduino device) compared to the TNB GPS distance meter accuracy around ±5 meters using two identical Arduino devices. Thus, it’s applicable for the TNB staff in collecting an accurate data for their work application. 2023-05-03T17:12:07Z 2023-05-03T17:12:07Z 2020-02 https://irepository.uniten.edu.my/handle/123456789/21540 en application/pdf |
