The purpose of this project was mainly to come up with an algorithm that could allow the distance mho relay to distinguish between power swing and three-phase fault in order to avoid any maltripping from happening. The power swing blocker algorithm was developed and tested by using Matlab SIMULINK. The algorithm was based on the ratio of second over first voltage harmonics that was constantly measured in the line and then been compared with a threshold value. The threshold value was obtained by running a few simulations before deciding on one absolute value that could produce consistent performance of the power swing blocker algorithm.
