Summary: | Fossil resources such as petroleum, coal and natural gas are the main sources of energy for the world to generate power and electricity. However, these resources are depleting. Thus, researchers are finding ways to utilize renewable energy instead of depending on non-renewable energy. In Malaysia, most of the power plants are gas-fired and coal-fired, emit greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide (CO2) and carbon monoxide (CO). Besides, gas turbines that are used in the power generation releases nitride oxides (NOx), sulphur oxides (SOx), soot and unburned hydrocarbon (UHC) which are harmful to the environment and human health. Biodiesel is introduced to replace diesel in running the gas turbine. This is because biodiesel is cleaner in terms of carbon, soot, NOx and SOx emission. The objectives are to determine the energy produced by the biodiesel and carbon emission in a gas turbine. A total of 11 samples which is B0, B10, B20, B30, B40, B50, B60, B70, B80, B90 and B100 which made up of Calophyllum Inophyllum feedstock biodiesel and diesel were used for analysis. A thermodynamic method which is first law analysis of reacting system method is used in the analysis to find out the energy release and gas emission by biodiesel. The analysis is done in three cases which are lean, stoichiometric and rich. For all the three cases, B10 which consist of 10% biodiesel and 90% distillate biodiesel produced the highest energy, lowest carbon emission and highest energy to lowest carbon emission ratio. |
