Summary: | This thesis works on the user friendly procedures or guidelines for the Acoustic Emission (AE) detection of Partial Discharge (PD). In order to do that, the understanding on PD phenomena is needed. PD as its name would suggest, is an electrical discharge that occurs across a portion of the insulation between two conducting electrodes, without completely bridging the gap. This thesis will explain the types of PD detection methods that are being used worldwide such as laboratory methods, differential discharge bridge and also AE methods. Other important notes in PD are the different types of PD such as internal discharge, surface discharge and corona discharge. Secondly is the understanding on AE. AE is a naturally occurring phenomenon whereby external stimuli such as mechanical loading generate sources of elastic waves. |
