Muhammad Raziq Fitri Bin Hamdan Algal oil -palm biomass As more renewable energy generations were applied worldwide due to near-depletion of fossil fuel, more research works is required from every sub-course of science to promote an upgrade to greenery. From previous subjects and studies, it can be considered that biomass is the most reliable renewable energy resource due to its low cost and have carbon neutral feature which made biomass more interesting. This thesis report studied the basic behaviour of different combinations of wild common species macro algae (seaweed) in Malaysia and oil palm fruit bunch in form of fibre as biomass fuel. The combination of biomass were divided into few samples with different ratio to determine if any ratio gives higher calorific value due to its different material compositions thus making it a better fuel. By conducting proximate analysis and ultimate analysis as starting point of biomass characterization, the basic biomass characteristics were determined which are moisture content (MC), ash (A), volatile combustible matter (VM or VCM) and fixed carbon (FC) using proximate analysis. In addition, the second basic characteristic which is crucial to biomass fuel application is elemental content of carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, sulphur and oxygen, obtainable from ultimate analysis. As the two basic characteristics were obtained, thermodynamics equations can be applied to the numbers to obtain the heating values (HHV) or known as calorific value of biomass fuel. A comparative study were done by utilizing few correlation models to the data obtained from proximate and ultimate analysis. Research data obtained from this thesis were compared with various literatures to define the validity of this papers findings.
