Growth competition of dinoflagellate and diatom in mox cultures condition

Toxin producing dinoflagellate Alexandrium minulllm, Prorocenlrnm lima and diatom Pseudo-nilzschia pungens were studied to determine growth inhibition of species by allelopathic effect. This study was conducted in mix culture condition of five different ratios; I: I, I: 1 0, I: I 00, 10: I and 100:...

This study was conducted in mix culture condition of five different ratios; I: I, I: 1 0, I: I 00, 10: I and 100: I. Experiments were conducted at constant temperature 26°C and under 12:12 light: dark photoperiod with 23 psu and 30 psu salinities. Salinity test was conducted to determine suitable salinity regime for the mix culture test. There were four treatments tested on the competition among this three species of phytoplankton in mix culture experiment. At salinities 23 psu and 30 psu, allelopathic effect of P. pungens was greater than A. min ilIum and P. lima. Alexandrillm minulum tended to be allelopathic and inhibit the growth of competitor at higher cell ratio. Prorocenlrnm lima was able to compete with the target cell in higher cell density at 30 psu. Result of this study had shown that abundance of species in mix cultures would determine their capacities to produce inhibitory substances in salinity fluctuations and different cell ratios.
