Summary: | Introduction: Medication is a licensed drug used to treat medical conditions but misuse of
medication can be dangerous and even fatal. Recognizing and understanding medication errors
and their causes through reporting systems is crucial. Despite improvements in reporting
strategies, underreporting of medication errors remain significant.
Objectives: This study examines the relationship between knowledge and attitude towards
medication error reporting among undergraduate nursing students in UNIMAS.
Methodology: A cross-sectional study conducted among undergraduate nursing students at the
Universiti Malaysia Sarawak. A total of 142 participants were selected using a simple random
sampling method. A structured item questionnaire which adopted 4 items of the knowledge
towards medication error reporting and 22 items of the attitude towards medication error
reporting for data collection. SPSS version 27.0 was used to analyse the data of the participants.
Results: The findings revealed majority of the participants have sufficient knowledge and
positive attitude towards medication error reporting. In addition, Spearman’s correlation
coefficient revealed a strong positive relationship between knowledge and attitude towards
medication error reporting.
Conclusion: The results of this study offer valuable data that can serve as a foundation for
future research on the relevant subject. The results indicate that while there is a general
awareness of the importance of reporting medication errors, significant gaps remain in both
knowledge and attitude that could impact reporting practices. Addressing these gaps through
targeted educational interventions and fostering a supportive environment for error reporting
are crucial steps in enhancing patient safety. |
