| Summary: | Established in 1936 as the General Wildlife Federation (for the first two years of its existence), the National Wildlife Federation (NWF) was founded to unite sportsmen, outdoor enthusiasts, and individuals interested in conservation in the United States (Allen 1987). Among its organization goals was to heighten conservation awareness via fundraising activities, including the issuance of conservation stamps (or seals), which was innovative for its time. The most famous of the stamp series was issued annually between 1938 and 1996, when images from the recent past were reproduced, and for 1955, when two versions were issued. An annual occasional release (between 1957 and 1999), sometimes referred to as ‘Spring’ stamps, and an end of the year Christmas series were also issued (between 1956 and 2000); see Cotton (2009). In this essay, I review reptile stamps issued by the NWF in its annual series, except one issued 1996 from the ‘Spring’ series (E2602). |
