ANALYSIS OF SLANG LANGUAGE USED BY MALAYSIAN KPOP FANS ON TWITTER

In this era of digital technology, the internet has become a platform for communication for communities across the globe so much so that the internet slang has become a common social language use. On a different note, a type of internet slang found to be of extensive use is the K-Pop slang, used by K-Pop fans to interact with one another especially on Twitter. These K-Pop fans express their thoughts and feelings on Twitter by using this Internet slang, that can only be understood among the K-Pop community. Hence, this paper aims to examine the functions of the slang language used by the Malaysian K-Pop fans on Twitter. In addition, it tries to acknowledge the existence of this internet slang and record the type of slang vocabularies used in order to spread awareness of its uses so that other members of societies could comprehend the language used by the K-Pop fans. The theory by Allan and Burridge (2006) to identify the type of slang language and determine the functions of slang language is used to analyse 50 conversations among Malaysian K-Pop Fans on Twitter. The findings have shown that there are five types of slang language used across the 50 posts and its thread, with a total of 91 slang words identified. Distributions among the types are found to be; 18 data for fresh and creative, 2 data for compounding, 55 data for imitative, 5 data for acronym, and 11 data for clipping resulting the imitative type as the most dominant type of slang language used. Seven functions of slang languages were found with 14 slang words displaying the function to address, 4 slang words to humiliate, 8 slang words to initiate relax conversation, 10 slang words to form intimate atmosphere, 20 slang words to express impression, 5 slang words to reveal anger, and 30 slang words to show intimacy hence making this function the most dominant throughout the findings.
