Description
Summary:Language is a communication tool used by human beings in their lives to communicate in order to preserve culture and convey information to members of society. The practice of language decency when communicating is a basic thing to produce social order and prerequisites for cooperation among human beings in any society. This study was conducted to examine the extent of the use of language politeness among students in urban and rural areas today in daily life. The objective of this study is to identify the differences in language politeness practices practiced by students of Sri Aman National High School and Engkilili National High School and the second objective is to discuss the effect of language politeness practices practiced by students on themselves based on Brown's Politeness Theory and Levinson 1987. The methodology used in conducting this study is to use research methods and field methods. The study involved 100 respondents from both schools, namely Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Sri Aman and Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Engkilili. A total of 50 respondents will be selected from Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Sri Aman and another 50 people from Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Engkilili. The instrument used is a questionnaire using ‘Google Form’. The results of the study found that the students who were respondents practiced language politeness in a relatively formal context by taking into account the listener's self and also its relationship with other factors such as social status, age, intimacy, place or location and situation when communicating. The politeness practice practiced by students in both schools, namely Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Sri Aman and Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Engkilili, has a very positive effect on the students.
