Electronics Nuclear engineering In these recent years, the technology of smart home has gained worldwide attention. Smart home technology is a basic home amenity that has been fitted with communication technology, enabling some degree of either automation or remote control such as home security systems and household appliances. Although smart homes are common in today’s society, they are still unaffordable for middle-low-class families. But in comparison, the price of a smart home system is more affordable than years back then. The main purpose of a smart home system is to improve the quality of life. Hence, tasks such as turning on or off the lights, open and close the curtains should be done automatically instead of using hands. Besides, instead of using a remote control to control household appliances, it is more convenient that the user is able to control it through voice command. Therefore, an automatic lighting and curtain switching system and voice command remote control are designed and developed in this project. The lights and the curtains will automatically turn on and close respectively during the night and vice versa. Furthermore, when entering the room, a light will automatically turn on to prevent the surrounding environment from being too dark. A speech recognizer is used in this project which allows user to control household appliances through voice command. As a result, a low-cost smart home prototype is successfully designed and developed by using Arduino UNO as microcontroller in this project.
