Summary: | Belawi Mujan and Merit Tebulan coal seams collected from Merit-Pilla coalfield of Kapit, Sarawak were analysed for their organic composition. The coal samples were extracted using Soxhlet apparatus with a mixture of dichloromethane and methanol (93:7; v/v) and then fractionated on silica gel column chromatography. The fractions were eluted by increasing the polarity of solvent system which produced three fractions: aliphatic hydrocarbons, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and polar organic fractions. Aliphatic hydrocarbon fraction was analysed on Gas Chromatography-Flame Ionization Detector (GC-FID), while PAHs and polar organic fractions were analysed by Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometer (GC-MS). Aliphatic hydrocarbon biomarkers and diagnostic ratio of PAHs indicated the sources of organic matters and maturity rank for each coal. Aliphatic hydrocarbons biomarker indices such as carbon Preference Index (CPI), ratio of pristane/phytane (Pr/Ph) and proxy values indicated both of coals were matured and the sources of organic matter were from biogenic sources. PAHs compounds for both coal samples were generally contributed by pyrogenic sources based on diagnostic ratios calculated. The organic compounds detected by GC-MS in polar organic fraction showed both coals were derived from the terrestrial plants such as Vitex negundo plant and rich-oil plants. The proximate data indicated the rank of both coals are sub-bituminous. Heavy metals analysis indicated that both coals are safe for used to the environment. |
